A ratio compares values. A ratio says how much of one thing there is compared to another thing.
It compares two quantities by division, with the number being divided termed the antecedent and the divisor termed the consequent.
Examples of ratios include debt income ratio, liquidity ratios, solvency ratios e.t.c.
Formula to calculate ratio.
The ratio of numbers a and b is written as a:b. Ratios should always be simplified.
Example 1:
In a room, there are 28 women and 21 men. What is the ratio of men to women.
Therefore, after simplify the ratio, the ratio of men to women is 3:4.
Example 2:
In the same room, what is the ratio of women to the total number of people.
We begin by finding the total number of people in the room.
Hence, the total number of people is 49.
Then we find the ratio of women to the total number of people.
Therefore, after simplifying the ratio, the ratio of women to the total number of people is 4:7.
