Before we get into discussing how to calculate acreage, lets define it. Acreage is area in acres.
The acre is a statute measure in the U.S., in the U.K. and in almost all countries of the former British Empire.
This unit is mostly used in measuring the area of land.
Basically, the USA uses acres because the unit is a convenient size when you’re talking about property areas
Formula to Calculate the Acreage.
If we have not been given the area already, we begin by finding the area of the land in the units given whether feet or meters.
Since 1 acreage is equal to 43,560 square feet, and approximately 4,047 squared meters, or about 40% of a hectare. It is easy to calculate the area of the land in acres.
Example:
Suppose the area of a piece of land is 80,000 ft², calculate the area of the land in acres.
Since we know that 43,460 ft² makes an acre, therefore;
Thus, the area of the land is 1.83 acres.
Example 2:
What is the acreage of a rectangular piece of land of whose is length 720m and width 500m?
We begin by finding the area of the land using the formula to calculate area of a rectangle.
Area = Length x Width
= 720 x 500
= 360,000m2
Then we convert the area in squared meters to acres.
Since 4046.856422m2 = 1 acre
Therefore, to convert m2 to acres we divide the m2 by 4046.856422
= 360,000 ÷ 4046.86
= 88.96 acres
