What is Volume?
In this article, we will learn how to calculate volume in gallons but before that, lets define volume. Volume can be defined as the 3-dimensional space enclosed by a boundary or occupied by an object or simply how much space an object takes up.
Often, the volume of a liquid such as milk or water is measured in gallons. In our case we will learn how to calculate volume in U.S. (United States) gallons.
Formula to Calculate Volume in Gallons.
Conversion factors for some of the cubic units include;
1m ³ = 264.172 gallons.
This means, to convert cubic meters (m) into gallons, you multiply the cubic meters by 264.172.
1 ft³ = 7.48052 gallons.
This states that, to convert cubic feet (ft) into gallons, we multiply the cubic feet by 7.48052.
1 gallon = 231 in³ .
It means that, to convert cubic inches (in) into gallons, we divide the cubic inches by 231.
1 gallon = 3,785.41 cm³ .
This means that, to convert cubic centimeters into gallons, we divide the cubic centimeters by 3,785.41.
In conclusion, we have established that every cubic unit has a different conversion factor.
Example 1:
How many gallons of water can fit in a tank with a radius of 2 m and a height of 8 m.
Here, we’ll start by finding the volume of the tank.
Therefore, the volume of the tank is 100.544 m³.
We proceed by converting the volume into gallons. We do this by multiplying the volume by 264.172.
Hence, the volume of the tank in gallons is 26,560.91 gallons.
Example 2:
Suppose you are given the volume of an aquarium to be 1525cm3.
Since 1 gallon is equal to 3,785.41 cm³ therefore,
= 1525 ÷ 3.785.41
= 402.86 gallons
