It is called a foot, because it was originally based on the length of a foot.
Inch is derived from the old English ince, which in turn came from the Latin unit uncia, which was one-twelfth of a Roman foot.

The relationship between a foot and an inch is that, 12 inches are equal to 1 foot.
Therefore, if you want to convert in to ft, you divide the in by 12.
Length in ft = Length in in ÷ 12
Example:
Convert 144 inches to ft.
= 144 ÷ 12
= 12
