In this article, we will define a liter and a gallon and then discuss how to convert liters to gallons. Both a gallon(gal) and a liter(L) are units of capacity. The liter is not an SI unit but is accepted for use with the SI. The SI unit of volume is the cubic meter (m³).
A gallon is a unit in the US customary and the British imperial systems of measurement is used to measure very large volumes of liquids, while a liter is a metric unit of capacity, formerly defined as the volume of one kilogram of water under standard conditions.
Formula to Convert Liters to Gallons.
To convert L to gal, divide the volume by the conversion ratio which is 3.785. This is due to the relationship that 1 gal is equivalent to 3.785 liters.
Volume in gal = Volume in L ÷ 3.785
Example 1:
Convert 50L to gallons.
= 50 ÷ 3.785
= 13.2 gallons.
Example 2:
Suppose a tank can hold 2000 gallons and 2.8 liters of water. Calculate the capacity of the tank in gallons.
Convert L to gal.
= 2.8 ÷ 3.785
= 0.7398 gal
Put together
= 2000 + 0.7398
= 2000.7398 gallons.
Example 3.
Suppose the volume of the water in an aquarium was 2500 liters. If 450 gallons of the water was used, calculate the amount of water left in gallons.
Convert L to Gal
= 2500 ÷ 3.785
= 660.5 gallons
Find the Difference.
= 660.5 – 450
= 210.5 gallons remained.
