Before we start in on how to convert watts to megawatts, lets define a watt. Watt is a measure of power. One watt (W) is the rate at which work is done when one ampere (A) of current flows through an electrical potential difference of one volt (V).
While a megawatt is also a unit of power equal to one million watts or the energy consumption at a rate of 1,000,000 joules per second.
Formula to convert Watts to Megawatts.
Since we have been told that a megawatt is equivalent to one million watts.
Therefore to convert W to MW, we divide the W value by 1,000,000.
Power in MW = Power in W ÷ 1,000,000
Example 1:
Convert 500 million watts to megawatt.
= 500,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000
= 500 Megawatts.
Example 2:
Convert 1 watt to megawatts.
= 1 ÷ 1,000,000
= 0.000001 MW
Example 3:
Convert 145 watts to megawatts.
= 145 ÷ 1,000,000
= 0.000145 MW.
÷ 1,000,000
Example 4:
Convert 6100 W to megawatts.
= 6100 ÷ 1,000,000
= 0.0061 Megawatts.
