We can define perimeter as the distance around the outer edge of a shape or the length of the outline of a shape.
Perimeter helps us to quantify physical space and also provide a foundation for more advanced mathematics found in algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
Formula to calculate perimeter.
Different shapes have different formulas. For instance;
To find the perimeter of a;square we use;
Perimeter = Length x 4
To find the perimeter of a rectangle, we use;
Perimeter = ( 2 x Length ) + ( 2 x Width )
To find the perimeter of a circle which is also known as the circumference, we use;
Circumference = π x Diameter
Example:
Calculate the perimeter of a rectangular mat whose length is 4m and width 3m.
Therefore, the perimeter of the mat is 14m.
